Leadership That Works by Design
Vanguard 1 Leadership works with senior leaders and organizations where capable people and genuine effort are not producing the results they should. Through executive coaching, leadership workshops, and keynote speaking, we address leadership at every level where it matters, from individual judgment and presence through to how the organization around the leader is designed.
The Problem We Address
Leadership challenges rarely have a single cause and rarely respond to a single intervention.
When results remain inconsistent despite capable, committed people, the issue is usually how the work around them is designed. How decision authority is distributed. Whether accountability aligns with authority. What the incentive systems actually reinforce. Whether the strategy is feasible given real constraints. Whether leaders are reading the situation accurately before committing to action.
These are structural and systems questions. They sit underneath the behavioral surface that most leadership approaches focus on. When they are misaligned, capable people produce poor results, not because they lack ability, but because the conditions around them do not support effective execution.
Our Approach
Most leadership development focuses on individual behavior: communication, presence, decision-making habits. That work matters. A leader who communicates clearly, manages pressure with composure, and follows through creates conditions others can work within.
But as leadership scope expands, what the individual does becomes a progressively smaller part of what determines outcomes. The larger part is organizational design: how authority is arranged, how accountability is assigned, what incentives reinforce, and whether the strategy is feasible under real constraints.
Vanguard 1 Leadership integrates both domains of leadership. We work across the full range, behavioral and structural, individual and systemic, because real leadership challenges rarely live in just one domain.
Every engagement is tailored to what the client requires. Some leaders need to sharpen how they interpret situations, make decisions, and communicate under pressure. Others need to examine whether the organizational conditions around them are supporting or undermining what they are working to produce. Most need both. We deliver that work through executive coaching, leadership workshops, and keynote presentations.
Founded on Integration
Vanguard 1 Leadership was founded by Jerry Cook. The company and the methodology behind it reflect a career built across domains that most professionals experience separately.
Jerry is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel with extensive command and operational leadership experience across multiple units and assignments. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force A-10 Weapons School, the Air Force equivalent of Top Gun, one of the most demanding professional military education programs in the world, developing the service’s foremost experts in tactical and operational employment.
His academic background anchors the two dimensions of his approach: a Master of Arts in Counseling and Leadership, grounding his work in the behavioral, developmental, and interpersonal dimensions of working with people, and a Master of Science in Strategy, informing his understanding of how organizations design, align, and sustain results at scale.
Following his military career, Jerry served as a CEO, leading an organization through the strategic and operational challenges of full executive accountability.
Jerry developed the Vanguard 1 Leadership Model to integrate those perspectives and experiences, creating a methodology refined through decades of applying leadership at every level where outcomes depend on getting the design right.
Operating Principles
Leadership is the ability to produce defined outcomes under pressure, uncertainty, and with real limitations in ways that remain ethically sound.
Outcomes must hold when conditions tighten. If they collapse under stress, the underlying design was incomplete.
Individual behavior matters, but as scope and complexity grow, organizational design becomes the primary determinant of what leaders can produce.
The most common leadership failures are failures of interpretation: the right response applied to the wrong diagnosis.
Results achieved through coercion, manipulation, or distortion are not durable. Ethical boundaries are a governing restraint.
Leadership capability becomes durable when it is built and tested under the conditions it must operate within.
