Developing Leaders and Organizations by Design

Vanguard 1 Leadership offers executive coaching, leadership workshops, and keynote speaking. Every engagement is tailored to the client's situation, goals, and operating environment. We work across both the behavioral and structural dimensions of leadership because real challenges rarely live in just one domain.

Executive Coaching

Executive coaching is a structured, one-on-one professional development engagement focused on strengthening how a leader interprets situations, makes decisions, and produces results.

Our coaching takes a holistic view of leadership effectiveness. Depending on what the engagement requires, coaching may focus on individual leadership practices such as communication, decision-making, presence under pressure, and self-regulation. It may also examine broader conditions including how work is organized, how accountability is distributed, how priorities are reinforced, and whether the signals a leader sends align with the outcomes they intend.

The depth and focus of every engagement is tailored to the client's situation, experience level, and operating context.

  • Senior leaders, executives, and emerging leaders operating in environments where outcomes depend on judgment, coordination, and the ability to produce results under real conditions.

    1. Engagements range from 6 to 12 months with a minimum of two sessions per month. Sessions are conducted virtually, in person, or a combination of both. Every engagement follows a consistent process:

    2. Fit and Scope. The engagement begins with an initial meeting to establish fit between coach and client and confirm the areas of focus.

    3. Background and Insight. We gather relevant background through review of existing assessments, qualitative conversations with selected stakeholders where appropriate, a structured self-assessment, and an examination of the leadership conditions surrounding the client.

    4. Coaching Action Plan. Based on the initial discussion and background review, we define the coaching focus, the direction the engagement is designed to support, and how progress will be assessed.

    5. Implementation. Coaching is conducted through regularly scheduled sessions over the agreed engagement period. The client brings an active agenda to each session and applies learning between sessions.

    6. Evaluation. At the conclusion of the engagement, coach and client review progress against the direction established in the Coaching Action Plan.

Leadership Workshops

Vanguard 1 Leadership delivers workshops for teams and organizations that need targeted development on specific leadership challenges. Workshops integrate practical application with a research-grounded, systems-based methodology. Participants work through real scenarios, apply concepts to their own operating context, and leave with insight they can put to use immediately.

Every workshop is tailored to the organization's context, goals, and current challenges. We do not deliver generic content. We work with leadership to understand the situation, then design a session that addresses what actually matters.

These are examples, not a fixed menu. Workshops are designed around what the organization needs. Topics can be combined, expanded, or developed from scratch based on the engagement.

Example workshop topics include:

  • A Systems and Behavioral Approach to Leadership. This workshop introduces the integrated methodology behind Vanguard 1 Leadership. Participants examine how leadership produces results through the interaction of behavioral effectiveness and organizational design, and why addressing one without the other produces incomplete outcomes.

  • From Intent to Coordinated Action. Strategy is not aspiration or messaging. It is a commitment to produce a defined outcome using available capabilities under real constraints. This workshop walks leaders through a disciplined strategy development cycle, from defining outcomes and testing feasibility through aligning authority, accountability, and resources.

  • Why Execution Can Never Compensate for Poor Situation Analysis. The most expensive leadership failure is not the wrong action. It is the right action applied to the wrong diagnosis. This workshop develops the interpretive discipline that effective leadership requires, teaching leaders how to observe, describe, and classify what they are facing before committing resources or authority.

Workshops are available virtually or in person. Length and format are tailored to the audience and objectives, ranging from focused half-day sessions to multi-day programs.

Keynote Speaking

Jerry Cook delivers keynote presentations that challenge conventional thinking about leadership, performance, and organizational design. His keynotes draw on military command, combat aviation experience, and a research-grounded methodology to deliver insight that is practical, credible, and memorable.

Every workshop is tailored to the organization's context, goals, and current challenges. We do not deliver generic content. We work with leadership to understand the situation, then design a session that addresses what actually matters.

Example workshop topics include:

  • What Weapons School Taught Me About Organizations That Learn. The military aviation debrief is structured, rank-agnostic, and focused entirely on improving the next outcome. Most organizations have no equivalent. This keynote challenges leaders to rethink how their organizations process experience and turn execution into learning.

  • A Pilot's Approach to Reading Conditions and Making Decisions Under Pressure. Pilots evaluate and reclassify situations continuously. Leaders who cannot do the same apply yesterday's solution to today's problem. This keynote introduces a disciplined approach to reading conditions, classifying challenges accurately, and matching leadership responses to what the situation actually demands.

  • Organizations spend billions annually on leadership development. The research says it is not working. This keynote examines why the dominant approach to developing leaders is incomplete, what a systems-based perspective makes visible, and what has to change for leadership investment to produce the outcomes organizations expect.

All keynote topics are tailored to the audience, event objectives, and industry context. Jerry works with event organizers to ensure the presentation connects directly to what the audience is experiencing.
